A DAY AFTER !

It's over ! A spontaneous time shared by 50 alumni and 20 seniors who will graduate at the end of the school year. Everyone presented himself or herself and spoke about the studies and future, not forgetting the 3 years in the Lycée and some anecdotes... It was a pleasant time and we hope to organize it in 5 years. It's up to you to give ideas in order to make it different.
Good luck to you ! Keep going !
Best regards !

A BUSY DAY !

What an interesting day with some exceptional visits ! It's not very usual for high schools pupils to have the doors of Matignon opened. In fact this is what happened last Wednesday 28th January for 90 pupils of the Lycée Sainte Croix. Before having explanations concerning the agenda of the Prime Minister and see the rooms on the first floor, the garden and the room where the Prime Minister works with his advisers, we had a conference - debate with the State Secretary for European Affairs 's cabinet's director at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Quai d'Orsay. The pupils asked relevant questions and got straight answers concerning Entropa, the campaign for the next MEP's elcetions, the UK's euroscepticism, the legalisation of immigration in the EU...
They nicely managed to open the doors Mr Koutchner's office so as the pupils could see the place. They also took pictures of the clock which is in the room where Robert Schuman signed the Declaration of 9th May 1950, which has become EUROPE DAY.
We spent the morning in this district of Paris before crossing Alexander III 's bridge to go to the Grand Palais for Picasso's exhibition. With the 'roadbook' and the questions they managed to learn more about this artist and the masters who influenced Picasso.
All the pupils were concentrated and involved in all the visits.

DAY TRIPS TO PARIS

After a trip to Paris for the Secondes to attend a play in English : Olivier Twist by Charles Dickens on 21st January, 86 pupils of the English European section and 6 Ukrainians will go to Paris on Wednesday 28th January to meet an advisor of the State Secretary for European Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and then they have a guided visit at the Hotel Matignon, residence of the Prime Minister. After lunch, they will go to the Grand Palais for the Picasso exhibition. With the help of their roadbook they will have to compare and understand the influence of European masters on Picasso's work.

In the meantime 33 pupils will visit Orsay and have explanations on Impressionism and will in the afternoon attend a play in English by Shakespeare : Romeo and Juliet.

It's another time an opportunity for all these pupils who can discover other artists, playwright and add knowledge to understand their European citizenship with the analysis of France's EU presidency and the reactions of the French government concerning the piece of Art Entropa. They can also ask questions on the next EU elections on 7th June 2009.

CZECH REPUBLIC PRESIDENCY OF THE EU COUNCIL

The Czech Republic started its EU Council's presidency on 1st January. As a tradition, countries that hold the Eu presidency construct a decoration or sculpture in Brussels during their tenure.  The art installation sits outside the European Council building in Brussels. This piece of art called Entropa made by David Cerny, depicts the stereotypes of the 27 EU countries. It is already controversial as it is a bit of provocation. For instance Bulgaria is a giant lavatory, Britain has disappeared or France has gone on strike...
This project was unveiled last Monday in Brussels. Is it a sign of what this EU presidency will be ?
The Czechs explained : " Stereotypes are barriers to be demolished." Is it an echo to their motto : 'A Europe without barriers.'

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2009

Back from London where we spent 3 days with 53 pupils of Terminale. They must have enjoyed their time as the number of visits was impressive, with two evenings out. Moreover the weather wasn't as cold as in France. Even if I had delayed the time of departure because of the weather conditions, we made it to Calais without any trouble.
Many guided visits in English : Globe Theatre, a tour of the City, Turner's tour at Tate Britain... exhibitions and the musical We Will Rock You, 39 Steps...
Now we're back to exchange our impressions and work until the next visit to Paris on 28th January for a visit of Matignon and the Picasso exhibition.
Many other projects.
Don't forget to listen to RCF on 14th January at noon or 6:30 pm. Pupils who went to Romania as well as pupils who met MEPs in Strasbourg last November were interwieved.

So I wish you a HAPPY NEW YEAR 2009 and hope to see you on March 7th for the 10 year anniversary of the English European section.
Raphaël Lepelletier who came to talk to the pupils sent a mail to his classmates.

Best regards.

MANY EUROPEAN TIMES

I'm back !!:)))
It's been such a long time since I last gave you some news about the Lycée Ste Croix and the activities and projects dealing with the European Time.
The school year started with the victory of our 6 pupils of 1ère European section in English, German and Spanish.
They spent three days in St Nazaire, La Baule on 12, 13 and 14th September. They debated in commissions both in French and English. It was a very enriching time and they have already shared it with the other pupuls of 1ère and they were interwieved both by the journalists and TV journalists of FR3.
They will represent their school, their city, la Sarthe, les Pays de la Loire and France next november in Bucarest, in Romania.
Congratulations to Léa, Lucie, Anne-Laure, Julien, Marthe and Hélène.
You will have more information in further notes.

Last Friday, the Lycée celebrated the European Day of languages withe the presence of the primary school from Ste Anne and Ste Croix as well as the students of International Trade.
The pupils were given their diplomas assessing their level A2 or B1 in languages in agreement with the European criteria. Sainte Croix managed to organize these assessments last March and April. It will be compulsory for the final exam (baccalauréat) in the next few years.
It was a great time spent outside at the end of the afternoon and you can see the report on FR3, if you click on this address or copy it on the internet :

http://jt.france3.fr/regions/popup.php?id=l72a_locale

This day was decided by the Council of Europe located in Strasbourg, gathering 47 countries representing 800 million citizens. It is not a European Institution. It was created in 1947.

All this is made possible thanks to the synergy of motivated people who understand that it is for the pupils. It gives them great opportunities and make them live some exceptional situations.

The calendar will be given to you for the other events occuring in the school.

We will celebrate on 26th September, the European language day...

EUROPE DAY AT SAINTE CROIX ON TV

EUROPE DAY was a gain a real success this year. Many pupils of different 'colleges' had pleasure to present their projects in English and Spanish to older ones from Lycée Sainte Croix. Thay also listened carefully to the presentations to Prague, to the European Capitals and Institutions and London as well as Malaga, Santander, Vienna... Some projects with the theatre in English, movies in Spanish and saw some Austrians dancing the famous waltz...
The Lycée is the only one to have three European sections in English, Spanish and now German.

You may have seen on channel LMTV, Le Mans TV a report broadcast on May 9th, the day of EUROPE DAY. In the report some pupils of terminale european section of Lycée Sainte Croix speak about the positive aspects of their studies and personal development thanks to the cultural enrichment, the understanding of other cultures and languages.
3 minutes showing what the EU is, what the founding fathers' view was and what the European sections offer.
address to watch the news, find the ones of Friday 9th May 2008 : http://lmtv.sarthemag.fr

The building of the European Union has taken decades and needs more decades. We follow the steps of the founding fathers Robert Schuman and Jean Monet. The new generations must have the knowlege which helps them to be more tolerant. Their ideas was to bring peace between the countries and to avoid war.
